GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

Potassium hydrogen carbonate (KHCO3) is an inorganic compound that is available as a powder, granulate or fine crystalline. KHCO3 is also known as potassium bicarbonate and is used in food applications, for instance as a low-sodium raising agent, and in the pharmaceutical industry. PPC supplies several grades of potassium hydrogen carbonate to customers worldwide.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

As a leavening agent, potassium hydrogen carbonate provides a sodium-free alternative for bakery products and maintains a healthy balance of the body’s minerals.
Additionally, potassium hydrogen carbonate is used in agriculture as a biological fungicide and as a fertiliser. Fizzy tablets designed for human consumption often contain potassium bicarbonate and citric acid as non-toxic reagents to release carbon dioxide.
In wine production, potassium hydrogen carbonate is used to lower the acidity of wines by removing tartaric acid. The potassium ion reacts with the tartaric acid to form insoluble salt crystals (potassium tartrates), which can be easily separated by filtration. The carbonate is converted into CO2.
